How to share live location on any phone
A field guide to live location sharing on WhatsApp, Google Maps, iPhone, and Android, including duration choices, failure modes, and when a dedicated location sharing app beats the built-in options.

Live location is a temporary broadcast
Live location sharing means your phone keeps publishing fresh coordinates while a share is active. That is different from sending a static pin or texting that you are near the gate. People search how to share live location when movement itself is the information: late trains, crowded venues, night walks home.
Every major platform bolted live sharing onto something else. WhatsApp bolted it onto chat. Google bolted it onto Maps. Apple bolted it onto Find My. The buttons look similar. The social consequences do not.
Before you tap share, decide who needs the signal, how long they need it, and what happens when the plan ends. If you cannot answer those, you are about to create a forgotten trail.
WhatsApp live location
In a WhatsApp chat, open attachments, tap Location, then Share live location. Choose 15 minutes, 1 hour, or 8 hours. Send it. Your contact opens the live card to follow you. Stop from the same card when you arrive.
Group chats work, but every member can watch. For mixed acquaintance groups, prefer a direct message.
WhatsApp is the fastest answer when everyone already has the app open. It is a weak answer when you need the same circle available next weekend without hunting an old message.
Google Maps location sharing
Open Google Maps, tap your profile picture, then Location sharing. Choose a person from contacts or create a shareable link. Set a duration. The other person needs a Google account to follow a named share cleanly.
Maps shines for travel days and ETA style views. You can see progress along roads in an interface built for navigation. It is also easy to leave sharing on until you turn this off and forget for weeks.
On Android, Maps is usually the native path for share my location requests. On iPhone, Maps sharing still works and is one of the few clean bridges to Android friends without WhatsApp.
iPhone Find My and Android realities
On iPhone, ongoing people sharing lives in Find My under the People tab. Share My Location must be enabled on your Apple ID, and the friend must accept with their Apple ID. This is excellent inside Apple households and useless for an Android friend standing outside the venue.
Android does not have a single Find My equivalent for all friend graphs. Google Maps location sharing is the practical stand-in. Manufacturer shortcuts exist, but reliability usually still routes through Google services and Maps.
If your group is mixed, do not start with Find My and then scramble. Start with Maps, WhatsApp, or a cross-platform location sharing app so nobody is locked out by phone brand.
Duration rules that prevent creepy leftovers
Match the timer to the job. Station exit: 15 minutes. Dinner arrival: about an hour. Night out until you are heading back: an evening window. All weekend default on: almost never.
Permanent sharing has a place for some families who explicitly want it. It is a bad default for friends. Forgotten permanent shares are how location tools earn a surveillance reputation even when everyone began with good intentions.
If the app only offers Until I turn it off, set a phone reminder titled Stop sharing location. Unglamorous. Effective.
When live location fails in the real world
Dense urban canyons, underground transit, and festival fields with overloaded towers all degrade GPS and network uploads. Your dot may teleport, stall, or appear across the street. Agree on a backup landmark in text before you rely on the map alone.
Battery savers, Low Power Mode, and revoked precise location permissions are the other common villains. If two people swear they shared and neither can see movement, compare permission screenshots before blaming the app.
Also confirm you are looking at the same share. People often open an old static pin from yesterday and conclude live location is broken.
Scenarios and the right tool
Airport pickup: Google Maps or WhatsApp for one to two hours. Hiking day with weak signal: set a meeting time and landmark, then use live sharing only near the trailhead. Festival: live sharing helps early, then a dedicated event hub or What3Words style meetup beats a jumpy GPS trail.
Night bus home: a safe-home style check-in can matter more than continuous tracking. Friends often care that you arrived, not which intersection you passed.
Kinfolk is aimed at the repeated social case. Run live coordinates while you travel, drop to an intent ping when a full trail is unnecessary, and use safe-home timers when arrival is the only question that matters.
Quick FAQ
Is live location the same as share my location on iPhone? Related, but Find My sharing is usually ongoing with a person, while WhatsApp and Maps often use timed live shares.
Can I share live location without internet? Not reliably. GPS may know where you are, but the other person needs your phone to upload updates.
What is the best free way to share live location across iPhone and Android? WhatsApp or Google Maps for one-offs. A cross-platform app like Kinfolk for recurring groups.
