Find My Friends on iPhone: what it can and cannot do
Definitive Find My Friends guide for modern iPhone: how Find My People sharing works, setup, fixes, Family Sharing, Android limits, and smarter alternatives for mixed groups.

Find My Friends is now the People tab in Find My
Apple retired the standalone Find My Friends app. The modern answer to find my friends iPhone searches is Find My, People tab. Devices and Items are separate: your phones, Macs, and AirTags are not the same thing as friend sharing.
This rename still confuses people years later, which is why old branding keeps winning search volume. If a third-party App Store result says Find My Friends and is not Apple, treat it with suspicion.
How to share your location with a friend
Open Find My. Tap Me. Enable Share My Location. Tap People, then Share My Location, choose a contact, and send the invite. Your friend accepts on their iPhone with the Apple ID they use for iCloud.
If they accept on the wrong Apple ID, you will both swear the feature is broken. Confirm identities before you escalate into settings chaos.
After acceptance, both of you should open People and confirm the map updates. A successful invite with a stale pin still needs the troubleshooting steps below.
How to see a friend who already shares with you
Open Find My, open People, select the friend, and check the map plus the last updated status. Unavailable can mean paused sharing, no signal, powered off phone, Low Power Mode extremes, or revoked access.
Text them before installing random locator apps. Most locate by phone number tools are either fantasy or invasive junk.
Family Sharing versus friend sharing
Family Sharing helps relatives in an Apple household appear more cleanly in the Apple graph. It is optional for Find My people sharing, not magic glue for every relationship.
Friends, partners not in your family group, and housemates usually need direct shares. Do not force Family Sharing on adults who only wanted a night-out check-in.
Fixes for the most common Find My People failures
Verify Share My Location is on for the sharer. Verify the viewer accepted with the correct Apple ID. Toggle Precise Location for Find My. Restart both phones after iCloud glitches.
Check whether the sharer disabled location for Find My specifically under Privacy settings. Check whether they are sharing from a different device than the one in their pocket.
If location says No location found repeatedly despite solid signal, remove the person share both ways and resend a clean invite.
Hard limits you cannot settings-hack away
Android friends are invisible. That is the ceiling. Find My is not a cross-platform social map.
Find My also lacks friend-group event hubs, intent pings, and safe-home style timers. It is excellent Apple-native infrastructure and thin as a festival meetup product.
Permanent visibility without softer modes pushes some friends to refuse sharing entirely. Binary on or off is a blunt social instrument.
Better mixes for real groups
Apple-only household: Find My is enough for a lot of cases. Mixed phones: Google Maps or WhatsApp for one-offs, Kinfolk for recurring circles.
Many people keep Find My for devices and family hardware, then use Kinfolk for friends. That is not redundancy. That is matching tools to relationships.
